When purchasing a new desktop there are many features to get through, in order to get the best value for the price. Here are the steps to save you time and money on your large purchase.

From Quick Guide: Your Desktop Computer and You
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first thing to consider is the over all storage size in gigabytes, or GB. This is the size of the hard disk drive and will usually be between 80GB and 500GB. Chose the larger size if you store many documents or like to save video for a long period of time.

  2. Step 2

Consider the RAM, or Read Access Memory. This is shown as Bytes in the range of 256 megabyte to 4 gigabytes. Chose memory for what type of programs you are going to run. More memory for games and video, less for word processing and small business applications.

  3. Step 3

Video and graphics cards come installed on many machines and choosing the right one for your applications can be critical to the computer running properly for your needs. More graphics memory for games and video, less for word processing is the usual standard.

  4. Step 4

Finally, sound is pretty much a standard but can be enhanced. Here you have less choices, but more flexibility as sound cards are gaining quality.
