Would you be willing to compromise an incredibly inspired and dynamic vocal performance just for the sake of a few out-of-tune notes? If it needs a little help then so be it. What's the harm? Ensuring that the music can be accurately executed should be our only concern. Confusion about whether or not we should use any available correctional tools is unnessesary.

I will show you how to get the most out of a vocal performance.

In this example I will be using Melodyne Uno to handle the tuning chore.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • ProTools HD or LE system
  • Melodyne Uno
  • An out-of-tune vocal performance
  1. Step 1
    Duplicate track

    Duplicate track

I will begin by selecting the vocal I wish to retune and duplicating it on a new playlist. I will also rename it with the suffix, TUNE.

  2. Step 2
Consolidate the track for export into Melodyne

I will now consolidate the file so that when I search for it in Melodyne it will appear first at the top of the list when selecting "Date Modified"

  3. Step 3

On the vocal track I will instantiate an instance of Melodyne Uno. It will ask which channel you would like to use. Since this will most likely be a mono track I will select 'Left'.

Once Melodyne is activated it will also ask if you wish to use the application in Rewire mode. Select "Yes".

  4. Step 4

Switch over to the Melodyne application window and open up a new audio file to be tuned. We will choose the vocal track we originally set-up, which as you will note, appears first at the top of the menu.

Once the audio file has been chosen click "Open".

  5. Step 5
    Click

    Click

You can now see the waveform of the vocal we wish to tune.

Highlight the entire passage and click "Correct Pitch" located at the top right of the Melodyne window.

  6. Step 6
    Corrected File

Review the pitch correction by playing back by the newly tuned vocal passage.

  7. Step 7

If you are happy with the pitch correction you can now export the audio file back into ProTools by selecting the "Save and Spot To ProTools" command located in the File Menu.

It should now appear overwritten on the original track within ProTools.
