Pants too short?
Pants too short?

If your pants are too short, you may be able to let out the hem for a little additional length.

From Quick Guide: Big & Tall Clothing Basics
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stitch ripper
  • A needle and thread or sewing machine
  1. Step 1

Turn your slacks inside out to expose the seams.

  2. Step 2

Find the hem. This is the seam that runs around the ankle.

  3. Step 3

Use the stitch ripper to cut the stitches, working the point under the thread and pulling upward to cut it.

  4. Step 4

Pull out the threads and throw them away. You can now unfold the hem to your desired length.

  5. Step 5

If possible, fold the extra length up and sew it shut again to create a nice hem.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also shorten pants by rolling the hem up higher and stitching it in place.
  • Try to leave enough fabric to re-hem the pants, or the ends might unravel.
  • Do not use scissors or a knife to cut the stitches, or you risk cutting the slacks.
