Unless you live in Hawaii, or somewhere else with a year-round tropical climate, if you plan on taking up surfing you’re going to need a full body wetsuit. Choosing the right wetsuit can mean the difference between being cold, miserable and eventually giving up on surfing or being warm, comfortable and persevering to that next level.

From Quick Guide: Learn to Surf for Beginners
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

In order to find the right wetsuit you have to physically try them on, so first off you’ll have go to a local retailer that sells them--preferably a reputable surf shop.

  2. Step 2

Find a knowledgeable salesperson and explain to them that you’re looking for a new wetsuit, or fullsuit--one that covers the entire body. Tell them how often and where you plan on using it, as well as your experience with surfing, i.e. novice, intermediate, expert.

  3. Step 3

After deciding on a suit that fits your body type, go into the dressing room and try it on—unzip it, put one leg in then the other, pull it up to your midsection, then place your arms into the sleeves and straighten out any loose or baggy areas by pulling.

  4. Step 4

Once you have the wetsuit on, move around to test its flexibility--simulate surfing movements such as crouching and bending down. Pull on the neck area to make sure it isn’t too tight, or too loose.

  5. Step 5

If the wetsuit fits your specifications, then remove it by unzipping it, pulling on the upper portion so that it bunches up near your wrists inside out, pull that section over them, then pull it down past your knees, actually stepping on it from the inside with your feet to create leverage for pulling it down.

  6. Step 6

If for some the reason the wetsuit does not fit your body correctly, try a different size, or a different brand altogether as size varies from brand to brand. In other words, a Large in brand X may fit differently than a Large in brand Z. Most importantly, have patience and remember: you can realistically only try on up to four at a time before your body begins perspiring, making entry and exit extremely difficult.

  7. Step 7

Go to the counter and pay, and don’t forget to ask the salesperson about the wetsuit’s warranty.
