1. The first step in shopping for any fan is knowing both favorite sport and team. Nearly all fans watch multiple sports, but their level of passion fluctuates. It is important to discover which sport is their true passion and which team is their favorite.
2. When you have uncovered which sport is their favorite, you must then measure their level of passion for the sport and team. Often you can use generalizations. For example, an Ohio State football fan will be off the charts in passion, or a Buckeye fan is all about OSU football, and nearly anything with Buckeyes or OSU printed on it will be cherished. This is not true of all fans. So, do your research, take notes of how many items they own with their team's colors and/or logos. The more the items, the higher the passion, the easier to shop for.
3. Not all sports fans are seeking items with a team logo. Find out if they attend outdoor events on a regular basis. If so this opens the door to such items as gloves (very important, no mittens for men), hand warmers, coolers, grilling items and much more. The list of things a sports event junkie can and will use is almost endless. If they are tailgaters, find something that will be a conversation piece. Tailgating parties are often an exercise in showing off your sports mojo.
4. Purchase an autographed item. If your sports fan is more a sports athlete fan, look in to sports memorabilia. This can be expensive, but there a lot of sports fans that like individual athletes more than teams.
