Asturias is the central northern region of Spain. Backed by rolling green fields towering cliffs, the region has gorgeous beaches and surf spots. Though it is bigger than neighboring western Asturias, the waves can be difficult to reach as the mountains edge the ocean. It may take some creative maneuvering, but it can be done. And it’ll be well worth it when you do it.

How to Surf in Eastern Asturias, Spain

Step1
Begin at El Mongol. This righthanded reefbreak starts to work at head high and will hold up to a little more than double overhead. It can get crowded when it is big, but the lack of an actual beach reduces the amount of people out in the waves. Watch for strong riptides.
Step2
Continue on to Peñarrubia, almost next door to El Mongol. This lefthanded reefbreak works best during rising tides and can reach over 3 meters. Though it can get crowded at points, there are two beaches to either side that offer reefbreaks if Peñarrubia gets too tight.
Step3
Count on Rodiles. Considered the best wave in Asturias, Rodiles breaks in a rivermouth similar to Mundaka, the wave it is most compared to. Though it doesn’t get as big as Mundaka, Rodiles promises quality waves during low- and midtides. Watch for some pollution and, at times, localism.
Step4
Head to San Antolin. Another rivermouth wave, San Antolin offers a few different peaks to keep the crowding to an absolute minimum. There are both rights and lefts, the number of each depending on how the sandbars have arranged themselves. A gorgeous mountain backdrop makes waiting for waves that much easier. No crowds, no localism, no beachgoers. Perfect.
