There are lots of ways to help save a few pennies here and there by managing how you spend your energy mostly by conserving. There is nothing like a slowing economy to force us to stop wasting! By changing our habits on a daily basis, we can make a difference. Here are a few bits of advice on controlling the costs of staying warm this winter.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • sweaters
  • weather stripping and caulk
  • furnace filters
  • silver metal duct tape
Step1
Start by wearing sweaters! Instead of walking over to the thermostat when you get chilly, reach for the fuzzy stuff! A few layers topped with some fleece or wool should keep you quite warm at no extra cost!
Step2
Take a walk around your house and stand by your windows. Are there breezes drifting in through minute cracks? Take the time to add weather stripping and caulk where necessary. Some people put up plastic but I prefer using a heavy curtain for those extra cold nights. In the mornings, open the curtains and let the sun in to radiate heat into your home.
Step3
Keep your ventilating fans usage down to a minimum. Sure, you don't want moisture buildup in your bathroom (or smell either) but don't leave the fan running for any longer than necessary! Kitchen ventilation fans blow out cooking smoke, so don't burn your food! Keep the warmth in the house.
Step4
Keep your thermostat closer to 65 than 70. That 5 degree difference can save many dollars! Move around. Go take a walk. When you come back in, the warm air will feel wonderfully warm!
Step5
Keep changing your furnace air filter as often as necessary, usually at least once a month. Make sure your heat vents are not blocked so the heat can circulate around the room easily.
Step6
Look at your heating ducts if you have them in your basement. Use the silver metal duct tape to wrap any areas where air is escaping. If your heating system uses pipes, make sure they are insulated in cold areas.
