Reject an Invitation to be a Bridesmaid

Your friend is getting married, and you’re thrilled. You love her and her fiancé and wish them a long, happy life together. But when she asks you to join the bridal party, your first thought is to run the other way. Maybe it’s a time constraint. Maybe lack of money. Whatever the reason, do not feel pressured to accept. The below guidelines will help you retain the friendship while declining the invitation.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Honesty
  1. Step 1

Thank your friend for the invitation.

  2. Step 2

Show interest by asking what the position would entail.

  3. Step 3

Be honest. If you are overwhelmed at work and don’t think you can give her wedding the attention it deserves, let her know. If you are strapped for cash, tell her.

  4. Step 4

Offer to help with other, smaller aspects of the wedding, such as party favors.

  5. Step 5

Remind her that you are thrilled about the ceremony and can’t wait to attend.

Tips & Warnings
  • If money is an issue, decide beforehand whether you will accept should the bride offer to pay your share.
  • Make a decision and be firm. A pushy bride might have the power to coerce you into saying yes.
