Training is the most important part of running. Showing up on marathon day is meaningless if you don't train. Training is the key to success. If you've decided to run a marathon, follow the steps listed below to help make your training a success.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A good training plan
  • Proper footwear
  • Special running clothes
  • Knowledge of nutrition for runners
  • A marathon to run
  1. Step 1

Your first step to successful marathon training is to choose a marathon to run. I like to use marathons as an excuse to see a new city or take a mini-vacation. This year, I will be traveling to Vienna for their marathon, so I'll take a mini-vacation in Germany and Austria.

  2. Step 2

After you know which marathon you will be running, you will need to find a good training plan. I prefer an 18-week plan, but you can find plans that have you train for 20 weeks or more. Choose the plan that makes sense for your level. If it's your first marathon, chose a beginner's plan. Do a search on the Internet. There are plenty of free training plans out there that are really effective, such as Hal Higdon's.

  3. Step 3

Before you even decide to run a marathon, you'll need to make sure that you have been running at least 15 to 25 miles per week for at least a month before starting training. The longer you've been running, however, the better. This is known as "building a base". The longer you've been doing this, the better off you'll be. A good base will prevent injuries.

  4. Step 4

Now that you know that you will be training for a marathon, you will need to purchase a new pairs of running shoes. Keep track of how many miles you log on those shoes so that you can replace the shoes when necessary. Replace them again about 2 to 3 weeks before the marathon. New shoes will also help prevent injury. Worn out shoes can cause it.

  5. Step 5

Your next step is to purchase proper running clothes. Good clothes will help control sweat and help guard against the elements. Your best bet here is to visit a specialty running store and talk to them about the conditions you'll be running in. They'll help you make a good purchase.

  6. Step 6

Finally, understand that nutrition is an important aspect to your training. Runners need a higher amount of carbohydrates. However, there's a science to eating the right foods at the right time. You also need to replenish calories during your longer runs. There's plenty of information on the internet, or you can purchase a book about marathon training.

Tips & Warnings
  • Visit a specialty running store to find the right clothes and sneakers. They'll help you find the best products for your needs.
  • Learn how to hydrate properly and take in calories during your longer runs. This is essential because the extra calories will give you the energy you need to complete your training.
  • Don't give up!
  • As a runner, you may find that you will be in pain after your runs. It is important to know the difference between normal pain, and pain that can lead to a bigger injury. Definitely consult with a doctor about things that you are experiencing just in case.
