Tell If a Sports Mascot Is Racist
Tell If a Sports Mascot Is Racist

The issue of racial sensitivity with sports mascots has become an increasingly touchy issue in recent years, with several college teams changing their nicknames. St. John's University, for instance, went from the Redmen to the Red Storm. Should your team be next? If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, you might want to consider it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A favorite mascot
  • Perceptiveness
  1. Step 1

Does your mascot encompass an entire race of people?

  2. Step 2

Does said race of people not appreciate being encompassed?

  3. Step 3

Does your sports team's nickname include the skin color of the mascot?

  4. Step 4

Does your mascot engage in behavior that could be construed as offensive; for example, war cries, tribal dancing or clapping on the one and three?

  5. Step 5

Does your mascot routinely tell jokes that begin with "A white guy, a black guy and a Chinese guy walk into a bar" and end with "No offense!" when he notices a black guy or an Asian guy standing within earshot?

  6. Step 6

When your mascot drives a taxi to make some extra money, does he routinely pass by--or even run over--black people?

  7. Step 7

Has your mascot ever told a foreign mascot to "go back to where you came from"?

  8. Step 8

Does your mascot refer to non-mascots as "you people"?

  9. Step 9

When your mascot shakes a minority mascot's hand before a game, does he discreetly wipe it off afterwards?

  10. Step 10

Does your mascot own slave mascots?

  11. Step 11

Is your team nickname "the Little Hitlers" or "the Fightin' Klan"?

on 7/8/2008 I don't approve the use of a picture of the Texas Rangers mascot in association with this negative posting. It misrepresents the Texas Rangers. I attempted to contact poster but he refused to respond to me. Just adds to the obvious ignorance and immaturity that this type of posting stems from.
