How to manually transfer your Firefox bookmarks and preferences to another Mac.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two Macs running MacOS X and Firefox 2.x
  1. Step 1

Start your Mac with the Firefox bookmarks you want moved to another Mac. To copy the files between your Macs it's easiest to connect them using Firewire Target Disk mode or with a network connection.

Alternatively, you can transfer the files to your other Mac by emailing them to yourself or burning them to a CD.

  2. Step 2

Copy these instructions to a text file or open them in another browser and then quit Firefox.

  3. Step 3

Here's where to get the Firefox files that you want moved on your Mac:

Open your home folder, which is the icon that looks like the front of a house. Next, open the 'Library' folder and then the 'Application Support' folder. Then drag and drop the Firefox folder to your desktop.

  4. Step 4

If you have the Macs connected just copy the 'Firefox' folder to the desktop of your new Mac; otherwise load them from your email or burned CD, if that's how you transferred them.

  5. Step 5

To load the Firefox files on the new Mac open your home folder, then the 'Library' folder and finally the 'Application Support' folder.

  6. Step 6

Again, copy these instructions to a text file or open them in another browser and quit Firefox on the new Mac. If there's already a 'Firefox' folder rename it to 'Firefox Original.'

Copy the 'Firefox' folder from your desktop to the 'Application Support' folder. Start Firefox on the new machine and you should see all of your preferences and bookmarks.

Tips & Warnings
  • This will copy your Firefox Add-ons as well
  • You should backup your files before making any changes
