Working as a consultant or freelancer can be a very gratifying experience. You are working for yourself and are essentially your own boss. However, in order to be a successful consultant, you need clients. Building a client base isn't easy but with hard work and a plan, it is possible.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Identify the type of clients you would like to target. Some consultants work only with businesses, while others work with private individuals. Determine the type of clients you would prefer to build relationships with. Create a list of these types of client. Make sure the list is sizeable so that it can be whittled down.

  2. Step 2

Create a marketing plan for reaching your desired client base. You have to let your potential clients know that you and your service exists.

  3. Step 3

Reach out to your desired client base. In your marketing plan, determine different ways that will get your client's attention. You want to make a great first impression.

  4. Step 4

Follow up with potential clients. With this being the second time you are contacting these potential clients, you want to try a more personal approach. Calling is a great way to add a more personal touch to the process.

  5. Step 5

This approach may only net you a few clients, but this is a great start. Focus on doing good work for the clients that you have gotten so far. When you sense things are about to slow down, start at step 1 and repeat the process again. After some time you will have built up a consistent client base.

Tips & Warnings
  • Building a client base takes time and effort. If you aren't willing to put in the time, you won't build your client base.
