Tired of iron-shaped burns ruining your shirts, not to mention any chance of a second date? Well, with these simple steps, your shirts will remain impeccably pressed and burn free.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Iron
  • Ironing board
  • Towel
  • Paper bag
  • Steamer
  1. 1

If the shirt has buttons, unbutton them.

  2. 2

Lay the shirt down flat on an ironing board, chest side facing up.

  3. 3

Start at the point of the collar and work your way toward the middle.

  4. 4

Iron the yoke by placing one shoulder over the narrow end of the ironing board. Repeat with the other shoulder.

  5. 5

Working down from the underarm, iron the sleeves.

  6. 6

Open the cuffs and iron them flat.

  7. 7

Slip the shirt over the wide end of the board and iron the back.

  8. 8

Iron the front of the shirt, one half at a time. If the shirt doesn't open in the front, slip it over the board before ironing the front.

  9. 9

If the shirt is made of silk, wool or lace, iron it inside out. Lift and lower the iron instead of using a back-and-forth movement. Place a paper bag or tissue paper under folds or seams to prevent imprinting inside detail.

  10. 10

If the shirt contains sequins, beads or metallic fabric, lay it on a towel to create a softer surface, and iron on a low setting.

  11. 11

If the shirt is made of velvet, use a steamer. If you don't have a steamer or steaming iron, hang the shirt in the bathroom while a hot shower runs.
