Quickly Make Fresh Bread Stale

Contrary to popular belief about people wanting their bread to be fresh, sometimes it is necessary to purposely make it stale. Recipes for food items such as bread pudding call for stale bread, as well as many gourmet stuffing recipes. Fortunately making fresh bread go stale fast is actually a rather easy process. All you have to do is remove the moisture from the bread; here is how you do it!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • $2 to $50 budget
  • Loaf of bread
  • Dehydrator
  • Personal time

How to Quickly Make Fresh Bread Stale

  1. Step 1

Acquire a dehydrator. These can be costly but you can usually find a good one at your local discount superstore. Thankfully dehydrators also have a variety of other uses such as making beef jerky or making fruit rolls.

  2. Step 2

Buy a loaf of bread. A quick trip to your local grocery store or convenience store will yield you a loaf of bread for under $2.

  3. Step 3

Remove bread from bag. Take the bread out of the bag and place as many slices into the dehydrator as you can fit.

  4. Step 4

Remove the moisture from the bread. Set the dehydrator to the maximum setting and let it run for an hour.

  5. Step 5

Check on the bread. Take a look at the bread after an hour has passed and see if it has become stale or not. If it has not, let it stay in for another hour or until stale.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don’t squish the bread. Nobody likes squished bread.
  • Keep the plastic bag from the bread away from children; bags can be dangerous around children.

on 12/15/2007 When I have stuffing to make, I spread white bread slices on both oven racks and leave them in the oven overnight (oven is OFF). I When I am in a time pinch to make stuffing, I spread white bread slices on both oven racks and leave them in a 275-300 degree oven for about an hour. This removes the moisture sufficiently for making stuffing.

on 12/12/2007 When we make stuffing, we cut the bread up into lttle cubes, spread out on baking sheets and leave on the counter or dinning room table for a day or two. This gets stale enough to make good stuffing.
