    How to Visit a Newborn

  1. Step 1

Before meeting a brand new baby, buy a gift. It doesn't have to be extravagant; just something to say, "welcome." It's also a good idea to bring a meal for the new parents.

  2. Step 2

Realize the parents are going to be tired and overwhelmed. Make a point to ask how they are before fawning over the baby.

  3. Step 3

New moms are overprotective, so don't ask to hold the baby. Wait until mom or dad offer.

  4. Step 4

Wash your hands with antibacterial soap before touching the baby.

  5. Step 5

Bonding is critical those first few days, so don't keep the baby from his parents for too long.

  6. Step 6

Ask mom or dad if it's ok before passing the baby off to the next person.

  7. Step 7

The new family needs its rest, so don't overstay your welcome.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the baby starts to cry, don't try to comfort her yourself. It's excruciating for a new mom to hear her baby upset and she would rather comfort the baby herself.
  • If there's an older sibling present, make sure you bring a gift for him too. Pay him special attention before holding the baby.
