News Year's Eve in Times Square

It's a New York City New Year's Eve tradition--watching the ball drop in Times Square. But if you go there are a few tips you should know to keep your visit safe and fun.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Warm clothes
  • Ear plugs
  1. Step 1

Get there early. About 10,000 of your fellow New Yorkers will probably have the same idea but it doesn't hurt to get there at least 2 hours early.

  2. Step 2

Go to the bathroom before you find your perfect viewing spot. It's a mother's favorite advice and it definitely holds true here. Times Square on New Year's Eve is the last place you want to be if you really, REALLY need to go the bathroom. Take care of business before you go.

  3. Step 3

Dress appropriately. New Year's Eve in NYC can be anything from 10 below to 50 degrees so before you head out, check the weather and dress accordingly.

  4. Step 4

Be ready for the time of your life. It's loud, it's crowded--but hey, it's New York City and it's New Year's Eve!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't feel like being one among the million you can also watch the ball drop from the top floor of the Marriott Marquis Hotel on 45th Street and Broadway in the heart of Times Square. It is a bit pricey (prices START at $899 per couple) but hey, it is New Year's Eve and the chance to see the ball drop in such elegant surroundings is worth the price of admission.
  • Do not bring alcoholic drinks. There are police officers everywhere and they will escort you away if they feel you are acting a little too festive.
  • Do not bring knapsacks or packages. Before you enter the Times Square area there will be checkpoints manned by police who will take these items from you.
