It's fifteen below outside and you've piled on every piece of clothing you own to stay warm. But how about Fido? He may have his own fur but in times of extreme cold he could use an extra layer to stay warm, too. Here's how to find a coat for your furry friend that will keep him warm and fit him to a T.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure your dog. In order to make sure his coat fits properly it is imperative that you do this correctly. Dogs are measured along the back from just above the dog's shoulder to the point where the tail begins at the rear.

  2. Step 2

Decide what kind of coat you're looking for. If you want something for him to wear in wet weather, look for a waterproof coat. The material should be heavy duty nylon or polyester and have a waist strap. You may also want to look for a hooded coat to keep doggy' s head dry. The rain coat should hang slightly on the dog's torso.

For winter weather, the coat should also be water-resistant nylon or polyester but there should also be some fleece on the inside for extra warmth. You may also want a coat with a detachable hood for use in times of extreme weather. There should also be a strap on the underbelly to ensure a secure fit.

  3. Step 3

Go to your local pet store. For an even wider selection, head to a PetCo or Pet Smart

  4. Step 4

Check out Foster and Smith's website. Here they sell a wide variety of doggie coats and you can make your selections in the comfort of your own home.
