How to Configure Your IP Address

So many people have their own home networks and one of the problems than can arise is what to do when you have an IP address conflict. This usually comes when your network connections setting is set to static instead of automatic. Here are a few simple steps to straightening it out.

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows XP
  • Linksys Router
  • Internet connection
  • Moderate knowledge of computers
  1. Step 1

    Note: This is instruction for Windows XP users, specifically using a Linksys router.

  2. Step 2

    In your browser window, type in the address of your router (for instance, the Linksys WRT54GS router is normally 192.168.1.1) and hit Enter.

  3. Step 3

    The password is by default, "admin" so type that in and you should be in the Linksys page.

  4. Step 4

    Under Setup--Basic Setup, there is a pull-down that says automatic configuration DHCP--click that.

  5. Step 5

    Now exit that and go to your control panel (start/control panel). Double click Network connections (Windows XP) and right-click Wireless Network Connection and then choose Properties.

  6. Step 6

    Under the General Tab, go to Internet Protocol, and then Properties. Obtain an IP Address Automatically should be checked as well as Obtain DNS Server Automatically. Now, get out of there and retry your connections.

  7. Step 7

    This should fix the problem. For further complications you will need to contact the manufacturer of your router.
