Step 1
Decide if you want your Christmas tree to have a specific theme. If you do, this will dictate what ornaments you buy.

Pick out your Christmas tree before you buy ornaments. You won’t, for example, want to buy larger ornaments if you have a smaller Christmas tree. Know your Christmas tree before you buy your ornaments.

Buy at least a few Christmas ornaments that will reflect light. For example, you could buy any spherical glass ornament. This will reflect the lights off your Christmas tree and give it a nice glow.

Don’t necessarily choose Christmas-themed ornaments. There is no reason that all of your Christmas tree ornaments have to do with the holiday. Don’t be afraid to shy away from the norm.

If you don’t have a theme for your Christmas tree, pick an assortment of ornaments with different shapes and colors. This will make your Christmas tree more colorful and also give it some variety.

If you haven't done so already, begin buying a set of ornaments for each year. For example, there are several ornaments that will have the year directly on them. If you're struggling on deciding which ornaments to buy, simply begin a collection of these and continue that tradition on every year. You'll be surprised how long you can keep that tradition going.
