Macrame is the art of knotting rope to create decorations like wall hangings, plant holders, and more. You can learn this art by starting simply and practicing new designs.
Bonnie Brand Macrame Cord
Cut six lengths of macrame cord. They should be about five times longer than you want your finished holder to be.
Step2
Fold these cords in half to create 12 tails, and tie them to the ring using an overhand knot.
Step3
Separate the 12 tails into three groups of four tails each.
Step4
Knot one of the sections of four with a simple square knot at the hight of the top of the planter.
Step5
Tie knots in the other two sections at the same height.
Step6
Split each section of four in half, pairing each half with the pair to the immediate right or left. This should bring you back to having three sets of four strands each.
Step7
Knot the strands to hold them together at the height of the bottom of the pot.
Step8
Bring all 12 strands to the center of the bottom of the pot and finish with a final knot. Cut off excess rope or create a tassel.
Tips & Warnings
Most knots used in macrame are simple overhand knots, square knots, and hitches.
Create designs as elaborate or as complicated as you like, and add flair by adding beads or other decorative bits to the ropes.
