Christmas is coming and for the second year in a row, the Nintendo Wii has proven to be the most sought-after item on everyone's wish list. Lots of people will tell you it's impossible, but here are some tips to get one without really sweating.
Visit the Wii Tracker website. You will be able to search for the Wii through many online stores. Forget eBay with the ridiculous selling prices. Places like Wal-mart will usually force a bundle to buy the Wii, but you can always return the rest of the bundle items after Christmas.
Step2
Call up obscure stores to find out their availability. There are plenty of Targets, EB Games and Game Stops that exist in the suburbs or away from city areas. Think of a weekend trip into the desert or to less popular destinations. Use the opportunity to scout around for the Wii.
Step3
Places like Target will let you know when their next shipment of the Wii will be coming in. Some other places refuse to impart such knowledge. Best Buy will at times, but it really depends on the store managers. Visit your local establishment and befriend a manager. That will increase your chances.
Step4
The Wii is elusive, but if you have friends or family that work for an establishment, use them. You won't be the only one to do so. They know that their connection to the store would make them easy bait, but to each his own. You need one and you need it by Dec 25.
Step5
Camping out is not such a great idea. Think about it. You spend your whole time trying to find out if the store has the Wii and you see all these people who are like-minded. The best thing you can do is have someone else do it for you. Neighborhood kids or even your own, would be willing to do so simply for the pure joy of being able to enjoy the Wii afterwards. Use that to your advantage too.
Step6
Don't let high prices fool you. It is truly not worth it trying to get something that everyone else wants simply by overpaying. Get rid of the thought. If your child wants the Wii, and you can't get it by Christmas, then get them the Wii's motion-sensing controller, or one of the most popular games available according to their choice. Promise them that you will get them the Wii right after Christmas. Getting them the aforementioned items shows promise, instead of giving up. Even though they might show some disappointment, at least they know that they will be getting it as soon as it's available.
Step7
The Nintendo Wii is not the be-all and end-all of Christmas gifts this season. It has shown its promise of entertainment for more than a year, but it is up to you whether you choose to be silly over your consumerist attitude or practical. Investing twice the price into something that could be had at its normal price, when that money could be invested into something more practical is not recommended. You can use that to put more food on the table, or to give your children ice-skating lessons. Be sensible in your decisions. Do not go overboard.
Tips & Warnings
Children will eventually get bored of their toys. When that happens, explain to them the value of these gifts and the energy you expended into obtaining them.
Don't overpay by getting it on eBay. Use brick-and-mortar shops instead with their well-established retail prices.

I do like your article, but there are too many people doing what you're suggesting. In the end, it's just a whole big pile of efforts that would be better expended on a moral cause. Just my 2c :-)
