Things You'll Need:
- Guitar
- Lead Pencil or
- Nut Sauce (this is a product for guitar maintenance)
- 3 minutes
-
Step 1
Loosen the strings on your guitar until they are lax and can be removed from their nut slots, then remove them from their nut slots.
-
Step 2
Take a lead pencil, hold it parallel to the guitar and place the lead tip in the string's nut slot. *Alternatively using nut sauce (sold in most guitar stores) apply a very little bit to each slot and spread it thin.
-
Step 3
Rotate the pencil clockwise or counter-clockwise such that you are coloring in the slot with the lead. Do this until there is a tiny film of lead in the nut slot, on all 6 string slots. *(if you used nut sauce, skip this step)
-
Step 4
Put the strings back in their respective slots and tune the guitar to pitch. This will have lubricated the slot so that when you use your whammy bar the strings won't cease up in the nut which is what generally is causing the detuning while using a whammy bar.
-
Step 5
Now use the whammy bar a bit to get the lead, or nut sauce, applied evenly throughout the slot. You should now have a guitar that stays in tune significantly better. This should be repeated once every 4-6 weeks, dependent upon how much you play your guitar and use your whammy bar.
