Stop Your Dog From Barking

A barking dog can not only wake you up but can instigate an entire neighborhood of other barking dogs. There are usually several reasons why a dog will bark incessantly, sometimes because they are lonely, others because they are territorial. Train your dog to stop constantly barking by following these steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Barking dog
  • Personal time
  • Metal coffee can
  • 500 pennies
  1. Step 1

Get the coffee can. Pick up a metal coffee can from your local grocery store. Empty the contents out so you are left with just the can.

  2. Step 2

Fill the can. Cash in $5 for pennies at your local bank. Fill the empty coffee can with all the pennies. Replace the lid on the can once you have done this step.

  3. Step 3

Shake the can to distract the dog. Every time you hear your dog begin to bark, immediately grab the coffee can. Shake the can so the pennies rattle inside, a noise which will usually grab the attention of your animal.

  4. Step 4

Scold the dog. Once you have your dog’s attention scold the dog, “Bad dog no barking!”

  5. Step 5

Repeat the process. This will only work over time. Every single time you catch your dog barking incessantly use this trick. Over time the animal will learn to stop barking.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sometimes dogs can bark because they are lonely. Is your dog getting regular walks? Are you home very often or is your dog usually by themselves?
  • Never use extreme physical force to discipline a barking dog. This will only scare the dog of you, not barking. Distract their attention with the pennies and then verbally scold the animal.
