Although people are slowly starting to realize that in order to be healthy they need to eat healthy, most don't know how to get started. The best advice is to be aware of what you are eating. Get educated about what your body needs and doesn't need. Here are some easy steps to get started on your new healthy eating plan.

Step1
Keep a food journal. Writing down everything you eat will make you more aware of your daily intake. You can look back and judge exactly what you are eating and how much you are eating. Are you snacking too much? Are you eating enough lean protein? Make healthy adjustments.
Step2
Don't eat fast food. And don't let sit-down, chain restaurants confuse you, those are fast food too. In fact, many of the appetizers and meals from places like Outback, Fridays, Unos and other chain restaurants are worse than options at a standard fast food place like McDonalds or Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Cut out those fatty fast solutions and make it yourself at home, you will be able to control what you are consuming and you will know exactly what is in your food.

Follow the Food Guide Pyramid as best you can. Make an effort to eat vegetables, whole grains, fruits and dairy each and every day. These healthy food groups are meant to be staples in your diet, not options.

Cut back on sweet treats. Don't deprive yourself, eat what you want, just be aware of the nutritional information and what is in your foods. If the serving size is three cookies, eat three, not nine. An average man should consume around 2,500 calories each day, some people devour that many calories in their morning Starbucks alone.

Drink lots of water. You are supposed to drink eight glasses of water each day to stay hydrated and healthy, but water will also help you feel less hungry and will prevent excessive snacking. You should however have several small, healthy snacks each day to keep your metabolism going and to prevent eating junk food.

  • Performing even just a minimal 15 minutes of exercise each day will have substantial health results. Walk around the block, jump rope, garden or walk up stairs instead of riding the elevator. Combining healthy eating with a little exercise will provide valuable health benefits to your lifestyle.
  • Take a multivitamin each day. Multivitamins fill any gaps in your daily consumption to make sure you get the proper number of vitamins and minerals each day to stay healthy.
