Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Storage containers
- Shoe rack
- Close Hangers
- Wall Shelves
Step1
The very first step to an organized closet is removing everything you have in there at the moment. Take everything out and set it in a space where you can start to sort through everything.
Step2
Start sorting through all of the items you have removed from the closet. Toss any clothes you haven't worn in the last year into a pile for donation as well as shoes you no longer wear because of wear and tear or just because they may be out of style.
Step3
When sorting through all other items that were being stored in your closet try to limit the items you keep to those you use, will use or that have sentimental value. Any items they were tossed in there years ago and forgotten about can probably be donated.
Step4
Next place all the clothing you are planning to keep on hangers. Hang on the closet bar in order of colors. Hang blues with blues, pinks with pinks or oranges with orange. This makes it easier to grab things you are looking for later because you already know the area they should be in.
Step5
If possible, purchase an over the door hanging show rack and place all the pairs of shoes you will keep onto it. Since this will be hanging on the door it frees up a lot of space in the bottom of your closet that would normally be piled up with shoes. It also eliminates the frantic search for the second shoe to a pair because they will all be hanging together and easily viewable.
Step6
Now place all remaining items in storage containers or totes with lids. Label the contents to make it easier to come back later to find something you are searching for.
Step7
Now mount wall shelves on any open wall space you have on the closet walls. Depending on how much stuff you have you may need more or less shelves then others might. Place all totes and storage containers on these shelves.
Step8
At this point your closet should be fully organized and all that is left to do is haul all the stuff you trashed off to be donated.
