Television journalists are always looking for a good interview. Whether you are asked to talk about your business, a hot new movie or holiday shopping crowds it’s important to be prepared. There are simple things that can make an interview successful. Read on to learn how to be a good television interview.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be natural. Don’t try to rehearse a script or use big words that don’t normally show up in conversations.

  2. Step 2

Remember to keep answers short. Reporters log and edit all of their interviews. Long-winded answers can be frustrating for time-starved journalists looking for the perfect sound bite.

  3. Step 3

Be available. If a reporter calls you up asking for help with a story, keep your schedule open. Because of tight deadlines, reporters often don’t have very long to wait.

Tips & Warnings
  • If it’s a planned interview, think about what to wear. Avoid stripes and small prints that may not photograph well.
  • Don’t be offended if the interview doesn’t make it on air. Often reporters have a very short amount of time to fill and may be required to make quick cuts.
