How to Manage Toothache Pain

How to Manage Toothache Painthumbnail
Many toothaches require an antibiotic to relieve the pain completely.

Toothaches are caused by many things including an abscessed tooth, tooth fracture, tooth decay or a damaged filling. When a toothache becomes severe, you may notice swelling around the tooth and you may even have a fever or headache. With most toothaches, you should see your dentist to have him fix the problem; however, if a toothache appears at an inconvenient time for this, there are ways to help manage the pain until you can go to a dentist.

Take an over-the-counter pain reliever. Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen and follow the directions on the package for dosage information. This may not eliminate the entire pain from the toothache, but it will often make the pain less drastic and will reduce any inflammation that might be present.

Purchase an over-the-counter oral analgesic, similar to gels that parents place in teething baby's mouths. Place the ointment on and around the gum line of the tooth causing the pain. This gel helps numb the infected area, which dulls or eliminates the pain temporarily.

If there is anything around the tooth, the pain may become worse. Eliminate any food or debris lodged next to the tooth with dental floss. After using floss, rinse with a mixture of warm water and peroxide, made with equal parts. The peroxide helps to keep the area clean and the warm water will not feel harsh on a sensitive tooth.

Crush a garlic clove and apply it directly to where the pain it. Garlic is a natural antiseptic and analgesic and therefore will help with the infection and reduce the inflammation.

Another natural remedy for relieving toothache pain is through a lime. Limes contain vitamin C and help control infections. Squeeze some lime juice on the affected tooth to relieve some of the pain.

      • 6

Put a few drops of vanilla extract on the tooth. This remedy is also known for relieving tooth pain. It normally takes approximately three or four drops of the extract to help.
