New Year's Eve in New York City can be one of the most magical and amazing experiences you will ever be a part of; it can also be a headache, a stress or a crime scene if you are not careful. While no one is out to get just you, if you carry yourself in a certain way you are much more likely to be preyed upon. Therefore there are a couple of rules of thumb you should heed so that you are not left exposed. Read on to learn how to plan your places to go on New Year's Eve in New York City.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Go all over. If you would like to just travel around, going from place to place without direction, the holiday season is the perfect time to do so. While many people may be averse to the cold or the distance that you often need to go to get anywhere, the rewards can be exponentially great when you happen upon a site that you wouldn't ordinarily have other wise been able to see. For this reason, the aimless wander is a thing which you should use some discretion. Particularly if you are unafraid of being approached by the peddling hustler or the desperate homeless and you are able to keep your wits about you, you should be fine.
Step2
Go with friends. If you are going somewhere unfamiliar this is generally a good idea; even more so in a city such as New York around the holidays. While visiting yourself and being sucked into the magic and wonder of New York City nights is a great thing for any age, you should do yourself a favor and try to bring someone along with you so that you will present less of a target to the prowling predator.
Step3
Arrive on time. Whether you are talking about a spot along the waterfront in Williamsburg, a penthouse escape in Chelsea or a stool in a pub on Broome Street, there are any number of ways to enjoy the New York City area on your own terms on New Year's Eve. While many people may think of the Times Square fiasco as the beginning and end, it is not that at all. There are parties, fireworks, bars, celebrations and other private events held everywhere in the city on New Year's Eve.
Step4
Go see the ball. When all other options for partying have been exhausted, there is always Times Square. Truthfully, you should get out and see the ball drop at least one time. Go out to Times Square and spend hours and hours pressed up against complete strangers who are loud, drunk and stinky. If for no other reason, you should go because who knows how long something so communal and spectacle will be an attraction, let alone allowed. There are always plenty of reasons to go to New York City on New Year's Eve, but if you lag in your planning and don’t back yourself up, you could end up regretfully disappointed.
