Shop In a Thrift Store

Shopping in thrift stores can lead to some great bargains. Use these tips to shop wisely and safely.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check items carefully before buying at any thrift store. Many thrift stores sell items that have been recalled or taken off the market. Since most thrift stores don't have time to check every item they sell, it is up to you to make sure the product you buy is safe.

  2. Step 2

Call around to find out if your local thrift store has a special sale day. Some Salvation Army stores have half-price days.

  3. Step 3

Go first thing in the morning. If you go later in the day the store may be picked over already.

  4. Step 4

Shop off season for the greatest deals. If you are looking for a winter coat in the middle of summer, you could get a real bargain.

  5. Step 5

Dry clean and launder everything. Most thrift store items are not cleaned before they are put on the racks.

  6. Step 6

Look for the potential in furniture pieces. Sometimes a coat of paint or refinishing will turn a ten dollar table into something beautiful for your home.
