Step 1
Start at scenic Santa Maria de Oia, just north of the river dividing Portugal and Spain. This lefthanded reefbreak forms a heavy barrel with a solid swell from the north. Watch for rocks in the middle of the wave that become exposed during low tide as well as a strong riptide.
-
Step 2
Head along the coast to Rio Siera. Nestled on the edge of a peninsula, this beachbreak is always working. There are strong riptides, but no crowds and gorgeous scenery.
-
Step 3
Drive north to Malpica, near La Coruña. Sheltered from the wind by cliffs on the western side, this beachbreak produces 2 to 3 meter waves consistently. The nearby fishing village adds a quaint charm to the beautiful beach, and offers fresh seafood.
-
Step 4
Find waves at Razo when other spots are flat. The sprawling beachbreak works with swells from most directions and has impeccably clean water. Little to no crowds, consistent sets and peeling waves make Razo and ideal spot.
