How to Wear Air Force BDU's
For the past three years, the Air Force has been working on a new utility uniform (pictured). But whether you are wearing the new uniform or the old Battle Dress Uniform (or BDU), the rules are still pretty much the same.
Things You'll Need
- Battle Dress Uniform/Utility Uniform and hat
- Brown or black T-shirt
- Black boot socks
- Blue utility belt
- Blousing straps
- Black polished boots

1
Start by putting on a black or brown T-Shirt. It should not have any holes or rips and should be free of words or pictures not related to your current squadron.
-
2
Next put on your pants and button them up. They should fit you snugly but they should not look painted on.
-
-
3
Thread your utility belt through your pant belt loops and tighten enough to keep the belt from coming loose. If there is enough belt left after buckling to thread the end through the first belt loop, your belt is too long and needs to be cut.
-
4
Put on your blouse and button the front from the second button down. Never button the top button - it is known as the "Geek" button. Button your sleeves to the same tightness on both sides. Your blouse should be properly adorned with a "US Air Force" tape over your left breast pocket, a name tape over your right breast pocket and you should have stripes stitched uniformly on each sleeve between the shoulder and elbow (if you are enlisted) or you should have your bar rank stitched uniformly at the front corners of your collar (if you are commissioned).
-
5
Put on your boot socks and boots. Tuck in any dangling laces. Your boots should be black and polished.
-
6
Hook your blousing straps around your leg just above the boot and fold the excess material of your pant legs up underneath the straps. This is known as blousing your pants.
-
7
Just before stepping outside, put on your hat. The brim should be pulled down to about the middle of your forehead and should be aligned parallel to the ground.
