Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Litter Box
- Litter
- Litter scooper
- Cat
- Personal Time
- Patience
Step1
Buy a litter box and litter. A short trip to your local pet supplies store will provide you with a litter box and kitty litter; don’t forget to buy the scooper.
Step2
Show your kitty the litter box. Next you need to make sure your cat knows that the litter box is where they need to do their business. Show them the box and litter, and place them in it. The litter has a natural smell that attracts kittens when it is potty time
Step3
Keep an eye on the kitty. Next you need to try and catch them doing their business where they should not. Once you do you need to discipline them, “Bad kitty, no potty here!”
Step4
Take them right to the litter box. Immediately take your kitten to the litter box once you have caught them doing their business elsewhere. Place them in the litter box and do not let them leave until they have gone potty. Reinforce this verbally, “This is where you go potty, now go potty!”
Step5
Praise them once they go. Once your kitten does go in the litter box, praise them. “Good kitty, good potty in the box!” Positive reinforcement of this is what will allow you to effectively train your kitty.
Step6
Repeat this process until your kitten grasps the concept of using the litter box. To effectively train your cat this may take several weeks.

on 12/5/2007 I was given a kitten by a little girl who saved her from a very abusive woman who was kicking the kitty down the street for piddling on her carpet. She obviously had THROWN that kitten into a litter box because she was terrified of mine! I simply picked up her poo and put it in the box so she could smell herself there. It took a whole 3 days for her to start using it. Smart kitty!
