An off-road vehicle makes its way up a trail.

Not everyone can afford to own a vehicle for daily driving and an off-road truck. Follow these steps to modify your daily driver into a rock crawler worthy of extreme terrain.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tires
  • A lift kit
  • A locker
  • A skid plate
  • Bumpers
  • Rock sliders
  • Differential gears
  1. Step 1

Buy tires that are larger and have more tread than your stock tires. These tires should be aggressive enough to handle rough terrain but still comfortable to drive on the interstate. Aim for tires that are larger than 32 inches but smaller than 37 inches.

  2. Step 2

Install a lift kit that compliments your new tires. The vehicle will need to be lifted enough so the tires don't rub against the body. If the tires are on the smaller side, only lift your truck a couple of inches.

  3. Step 3

Buy a locker, which will lock the wheels together so they turn at a constant speed. If you can, buy two, one for each axle. If you can only afford one, buy a rear locker. A rear locker will get your truck into difficult terrain without costing a lot of money.

  4. Step 4

Protect your vehicle by installing skid plates, bumpers and rock sliders. Protecting your body and paint will save your truck's resale value.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your locker might need to be installed by a professional.
  • Tires larger than 37 inches will cause your truck to drift when traveling at a high speed.
