Learning Belly Dance Begins with How to Stand

Belly dancing is all about the female body, and it's becoming one of the most celebrated forms of exercise for women. Before you begin to dance, though, you need to know how to hold yourself. Dance is definitely a fitness routine, and you need to warm up before dancing while using the right posture so that you can prevent injury.

Things You'll Need:

  • Standing room
  1. Step 1

    Plant your feet flat on the floor. You should feel firm, steady. Your feet can be bear or you can wear any type of dance shoes that make you feel comfortable.

  2. Step 2

    Point your toes forward. This protects your knees. You should be able to see your big toes pointing a straight line right in front of you.

  3. Step 3

    Keeping your knees loose and relaxed and your toes forward, scoot your feet outward slightly. Each foot should be placed at about hip's width. This helps you keep your balance.

  4. Step 4

    Concentrate on your back and arms for a moment. Your back should be straight and your arms very loose. You shouldn't be tensed up anywhere in your body.

  5. Step 5

    Hold your head evenly, with your chin level to the ground. You don't want your head to drop forward or backward. Think of a ballerina, and try to mimic the way she would hold her head.

Tips & Warnings
  • Breathe deeply and close your eyes while you learn the new posture. With time, you'll feel yourself get "in posture" without any extra work.
  • If you feel your legs or arms start to tense, shake them out and get back into posture.
  • Always use proper posture when performing belly dance. Without it, you can cause serious injuries to your body.
