If you love the spicy scents of cinnamon cloves, and other spices at the holidays, why not make some ornaments so your house smells good all the time while they are on the tree.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp ground cloves
  • 1 tbsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground coriander (if available)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground anise (if available)
  • 3/4 cup applesauce, drained
  • 2 Tbsp. white (Elmer's-type) glue
  • rolling pin
  • flour
  1. Step 1

In a medium bowl, combine spices. Add the applesauce and the glue. Stir to combine.

  2. Step 2

Knead the mixture by hand for 2-3 minutes, or until dough is smooth and ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Divide into 4 equal portions.

  3. Step 3

On lightly floured board, roll each portion to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut dough with floured cookie cutters. You can make a hole at the top to add ribbon to hang at this point.

  4. Step 4

Place each "cookie" on wire racks and allow to dry at room temperature for several days. (Turn ornaments over once a day so they will dry evenly.)

  5. Step 5

Once completely dry add your ribbon and hang on your tree. These also look great on a package in place of a bow.

Tips & Warnings
  • For even more cinnamon and spice scents, make a spray with water and essential oils and lightly mist the ornaments throughout the holiday to refresh.
  • Do not eat or let children eat.

on 8/25/2009 Good idea on adding coriander, ginger, and anise; I have added allspice. I like your tip on occasionally spraying the ornament with essential oil. You might want to use vodka and oil; it incorporates better. Just use the same proportions as the water. 5 stars!!
