Ever wonder how you can get the most out of a 15-20 minute doctor visit? Here you'll learn a few important facts to help you-the patient-become a more active participant in your healthcare needs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Sit down and write a list outlining any old and any new problems you are having. Also take a list of your current medications including any over-the-counters. Don't be afraid to take your list in with you-it will make your visit much more streamlined.
Step2
Arrive at least 15 minutes early. Even if the doctor is running behind the extra time will allow the front desk staff to get youtr blood pressure and discuss the reason for your visit.
Step3
When you see the doctor ask her to address each item on your list if only briefly. It is important that you have a clear understanding of your diagnosis, treatment options and medications including any side effects.
Step4
Before you leave be sure you know where to go from there-need any labs-any x-rays and most importantly when should you return for a follow-up? Will the office call you with your lab results or should you call in?

Tips & Warnings

  • Always remember-it is your right to have a clear understanding of your condition and treatment options.
