Whether your tack is new or old, the importance of cleaning it is undeniable. A good cleaning removes the foreign debris such as dirt, hair and saliva that tends to accumulate during daily use. It also increases the suppleness of the leather and protects the stitching. However, it can be easy to put off cleaning tack unless there is a proper tack station already set up.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Nails or twine
  • Organizer chest/rack
  • Tack hooks
  • Saddle rack
  • Saddle soap & conditioner
  • Tack sponges
  • Worn scotch pads
  • Small bucket of clean water

Step1
Locate a tall, sturdy pole or post that is near the tack room but still out of the way. If no poles or posts are available, an open wall will serve.
Step2
Use nails or twine to hang a tack hook a few inches above eye level. This will ensure that you don't have to crane your neck when cleaning bridles, halters, girths and martingales.
Step3
Use nails or twine to suspend a hook for the water bucket right around waist level. Hang a clean bucket of water from it.
Step4
Situate a free standing saddle rack near the bucket and set up an organizer rack or chest with sponges, glycerin soap and leather conditioner beside the post.

Tips & Warnings

  • If more than one person will be using the station, try to hang the hooks at a height that will be comfortable for everyone. You can also assign a sturdy stool to the station for shorter people.
