Publish a Pop Culture Book

The Internet is the best tool for first-time writers. If your goal is simply to have your name in print or it is to make a few bucks, writing a book about pop culture is a fine venture. Realize that there are on-demand publishers who will publish whatever you can write. Of course, it is up to you to publish a quality product that people will spend their hard-earned cash on. Pop culture and its many facets are a goldmine. Take a look at the pop culture-crazed youth, advertising and the number of pop culture-infused media and reality shows that come into your home every minute of the day.

Pop Culture is by definition anything pertaining to the spread of particular behaviors and the beliefs that encompass them, the current common trends in the arts, thought and end results of work by a body of the population.

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet connection
  • Phone for interviews
  • Recording device for interviews
  • Word Processing Suite with a PDF writer
  1. Step 1

Be an effective writer. Effective in the sense that readers who subscribe to the piece of culture known as pop culture will read your work. Aquiring the skills necessary is as simple as reading the work of others in the genre and refining your craft through courses taught by professionals.

  2. Step 2

Specialize your pop culture topic. Being broad is good, but the fast-paced mindset of Americans practically requires the writer to focus. For example, choose music, or better yet, a specific musician or genre of music.

  3. Step 3

Generate content. You'll need to have specific knowledge. Some content can play out from your personal knowledge-base, but nothing beats words straight form the horses mouth, so to speak. Use the Internet as your friend for research and contacting management or public relations specialists who work directly with your subject(s).

  4. Step 4

Write your book using standard writing practices. As soon as you have your complete basis for your book's content, write. Be sure to use a pop culture voice as to entice your audience to read. Edit. Write some more. Edit again. Keep repeating this step until the finished product is exactly what you want it to be.

  5. Step 5

Publish your work. Self-publishing is the easiest and quickest route to getting your book to the public. Many self-publishers exist in the digital realm of 1s and 0s, aka the Internet. One that is most user-friendly is Lulu.

  6. Step 6

Promote yourself and your work. Promotion is the key to post-publishing. When you write an effective press release, you further your chances of getting your book read or sold.

  7. Step 7

Start your web presence. Most authors in the field will tell you that. You can hire a web designer or you can contact a hosting company that will offer templates for you to design your own (you provide the text and artwork).

Tips & Warnings
  • You can easily find free or paid public relations firms who will either send your press release to specific media outlets or they will design a complete public relations package for your promotion.
  • The best way to do gain a web presence if you do not have HTML experience or the time to build a site from scratch is to find a company that offers Content Management System sites (CMS). It's as easy as drag and drop.
  • Pop culture voices in print form are as easy to find as doing a serach on your favorite search engine.
  • Be aware that post-publishing is almost as important to your book's success as the content. Not all good content makes a splash without maing your work known.
