Unfortunately, this is a common occurence. However, being aware of what you can do to will keep the chaos and frustration to a minimum.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Note the time and place (write down street names). If you saw the person who stole your passport, make a note of their physical features to report to the police.

  2. Step 2

Go to the police station and file the incident. Take a photocopy of the report.

  3. Step 3

    Get four new passport-sized photos.

  4. Step 4

Take the passport photos, the police report, copies of your passport (ideally, you will have scanned and emailed these to yourself), any other pieces of identity, and $75 in cash to the United States Embassy to apply for a new passport.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your new passport will be temporary (usually valid for one year). It will be stamped "replacement for a stolen passport." When you return to the United States, you may apply for an extension at no extra cost.
