Martin Luther King's Day is a relatively newly celebrated holiday in the U.S. It was only in 2000 that all 50 states had made it a national holiday. As such, there is still much to learn about what it represents and what it is becoming.
It has been determined by Congress that it is to be a day of service, so look around your locality to see where you can volunteer. (See resoucres.)
Step2
Take some time to remember the accomplishments of Martin Luther King as well as others who have worked for our freedoms. We are very blessed to live in a culture where people have sacrificed so much for us. Check out your local library for books to read and educate yourself.
Step3
Check out sources for building a better community in your neighborhood thus deterring violence. Call your town hall and see how you can volunteer in areas of need.
Step4
Realize that this is a day set aside for us to give so instead of calling it a day off--call it a day on!
