Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Nice, durable journal
- pen
- creative brain
Step1
Start with scrap paper. Make a quick list of things you've seen people do that sound cool, or even brainstorm about specific people you know that seem amazing to you. What have they done that's impressed you so much? Think about things that you are often curious about (spending a night in a lighthouse, what it's like to fly an airplane...)
Step2
Surprise yourself. When I began, it was a list of a lot of things I genuinely wanted to do. (Climb a mountain, learn to swim competitively, etc.) But as the list went on, I found myself reaching outside the norm to write things I would NEVER ordinarily want to do (fire a gun, pet a shark/snake, etc).
Step3
Don't always be specific. Some of the things on my list are "Do something unexpected", "do something that terrifies me" and "Find something amazing". These things add to the mystery of life because you never know when you'll achieve them!
Step4
Don't omit things you think you'll never accomplish. It's better to list them and not acheive them than not to list them and forget about your dreams. The idea is to challenge yourself, not to put yourself down.

on 5/26/2008 I've heard of studies that say only 5% of people write down their goals, but the ones that do have them come true 95% of the time. Great article!

on 12/22/2007 Excellent piece, with great ideas. I've always been a bit fan of goals. Basically,if you don't know where you want to go (or what you want to do) you'll never get there (or do them).

on 12/17/2007 I had made a list of things to do before turning 50 about a year ago...I have accomplished more than half of them, which included bungee jumping. It is a good perspective to do things you wanted to do right now...rather than later...I am taking a stab at parasailing next :)
