Shoot For the Stars

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basketball
  • Basketball Hoop
  1. Step 1

Choose a basketball that fits the player's hand size. Young players learn best when using a smaller sized ball and will have more initial success.

  2. Step 2

Place the fingertip of the index finger on the air hole of the ball. Spread your fingers out comfortably, resting the ball on fingers and hand pads. Keep the ball from resting in the palm of the hand.

  3. Step 3

Cock your preferred shooting hand back as if you are a waiter holding a serving tray. Your shooting arm will form a 90 degree angle, with the upper arm parallel to the ground. Set the ball in your hand and support it lightly with your opposite hand's fingers.

  4. Step 4

Bend at the knees with your feet a little wider than shoulder width apart. Toes are pointing straight ahead, as are the hips and shoulders.

  5. Step 5

The release of the ball will resemble a good-bye wave as you flick your wrist and send the ball in flight. Flex at the knees then lift and extend your body upward as you release the ball. Finish on your toes.

  6. Step 6

Flex at the knees then lift and extend your body upward as you release the ball. Finish on your toes. Hold the follow through of the shot to check for correct form.

Tips & Warnings
  • Players third grade and lower should use a small ball and an eight-foot hoop. This will provide for proper form and technique and will give young players a better chance of success.
