Recently, surveys have been reporting that people are reading less. Eventually, this may lead to losing the art of knowing how to read a book, since attention spans will be short-lived. Reading a book, however, can be a personal, highly satisfying experience that requires very little expense.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A good book
  • A well-lit, quiet location
  • Time
Step1
In selecting a book to read, don’t necessarily go for a best-seller. Instead, select a topic that interests you.
Step2
Pay close attention to articles that interest you. Often these articles are excerpts from books, which you can find available on the bookshelves.
Step3
Before you buy or take the book out of the library, read the first couple of pages to see if the writing style is one that you enjoy. If it is, then bring the book home and put it in a visible spot.
Step4
Schedule a time to curl up in a well-lit spot in your home and set a goal for how many pages you will read each day.
Step5
Keep the television and radio off.
Step6
Place a bookmark a number of pages in from where you are in the book so that with each turning page you will get closer to your reading goal for the day.
Step7
If you find that you are getting drowsy, get yourself a beverage, then return to the book.
Step8
If you have other members in your house, see if everyone is amenable to sharing what they are reading and have impromptu book discussions.
Step9
When you have finished the book, give it to someone else if you purchased it or return it to the library and immediately select the next book to read.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always try to have the next book handily available. This will encourage you to finish the book you are presently reading in order to move on.
