Rich Text Format (RTF) is a type of document file that can be read and edited by many different word processors. Its file extension is .rtf. You might be requested to send an RTF file as an attachment over email or need to share a file with someone who uses a different word processor. It’s easy to save a file in Rich Text Format.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Word processor
  • Existing document

    Starting a New Document

  1. Step 1

Open a new document file in your word processor.

  2. Step 2

Go to File > Save As on the toolbar. A new window will open.

  3. Step 3

You will be given the option to save the file in several formats (“Save as type”). Choose “Rich Text Format” from the dropdown menu.

  4. Step 4

Name the file in the file naming field. The file has now been created in Rich Text Format.

  5. Converting an Existing Document to Rich Text Format (RTF)

  6. Step 1

Open the document file in your word processor.

  7. Step 2

Go to File > Save As on the toolbar. A new window will open.

  8. Step 3

Choose “Rich Text Format” from the dropdown menu in the “Save as type” field.

  9. Step 4

Rename the file. You’ve changed the file type, but the new RTF file will have the same name as the original. You can add "RTF" to the end of the file name to differentiate it from the original.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have to email or share a file with someone else, find out what type of word processor she has first. You may not have the same word processor, and you can suggest sending the file in Rich Text Format.
  • Not all word processors can read or edit RTF files.
