Most older people have a lifetime of driving experience, so age should not be the only factor to consider when assessing a person's ability to drive. According to the National Council on Aging, changes in vision, physical fitness and reflexes may cause safety concerns. The NCOA suggests that the key is to be aware of these changes so you can adjust your driving habits or choose other means of transportation. The USAA Educational Foundation, AARP and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration put together a free booklet, "Driving Safely While Aging Gracefully," that outlines the physical effects of aging as well as tips on coping with them so that you remain a safe driver as long as you can. Here are five strategies for staying safe behind the wheel:

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Be aware of your physical limitations and how they may affect your driving.
Step2
Listen to people who know you best and care about you most.
Step3
Discuss driving with your doctor. He or she can evaluate the interactions and side effects of all the medicines you may be taking.
Step4
Refresh your knowledge of safe driving practices and learn and new traffic control and roadway design features through a mature driver class.
