If you're sensitive to changes in your blood sugar, eating the wrong foods will leave you feeling weak and shaky. Here's how to eat so that you avoid the spikes and crashes.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Plan your food for the next day. Sit down in the evening and think ahead: What do you have on hand for food? Will each meal be eaten at home or out? Do you expect any meals to be delayed? If you expect more than 5 hours to pass between meals, plan a snack.
Step2
Make sure each planned meal and snack consists of a complex carbohydrate and some protein.
Step3
Avoid refined carbohydrates. Don't eat anything white! For example, instead of choosing white rice, white bread, and any quick-cook cereals select brown rice, whole wheat bread, and old fashioned oatmeal.
Step4
Avoid caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to affect the blood sugar levels of Type 2 diabetics. You may not be a diabetic, but why put something into your body that could destabalize your blood sugar levels?

Tips & Warnings

  • If you follow the above steps but still find yourself getting weak and shaky, try increasing the amount of protein you eat at each meal and snack.
  • Invest in some protein powder. It's an easy way to increase your protein at breakfast. Blend it into a fruit smoothie or stir it into your old fashioned oatmeal.
  • Assuming you're not allergic to nuts, keep some unsalted nuts on hand. If a meal is ever unexpectedly delayed, a handful from your nut stash will help keep you steady.
