Step 1
To begin your search for organizations, you should ideally have access to the Internet. There are many websites with volunteer information (see Resources below).

It is also good to talk to your friends and circle of contacts who have visited and/or volunteered in India. Ask them if they have any organizations they would recommend.

Email those organizations you are interested in volunteering with. However, remember that not all will respond quickly to email. To counter this, if you have contacts living in the city in which the particular organization is located, it is worth asking your contacts to contact the organization to see if they are open to having volunteers.

If you have access to a cheap phone card, you might want to call the organizations and discuss volunteering with them. Just remember the time difference.

When you have chosen an organization and arrive in India, remember that your job is not likely to be well-defined, and you will need to be flexible. Some organizations take foreign volunteers for purely administrative tasks because of their excellence in written English. Do not be discouraged if you are not able to be on the "field" as often as you like. You are still serving the organization's goals and enabling them to do more.
