Are you or someone you know struggling with an addiction to cigarettes while you are also pregnant? Would you like to have the low-down on what real risks are out there for your unborn baby should you decide to keep smoking?
Smoking, particularly after the 4th month, has been documented to be responsible for 115,000 miscarriages and 5,600 infant deaths A YEAR!
Step2
It can increase the risk of many different types of abnormal pregnancy complications such as:
vaginal bleeding abnormal placental implantation premature placental detachment premature rupture of the membranes early delivery
Step3
It has been suggested that as many as 14% of all preterm births in the US have been related to the expecting mother's smoking cigarettes.
Step4
Low birth weights can be another side effect. Being born too small is not just a matter of size. Being too small is the leading cause of infant illness and death just before, during or just after birth.
Step5
Babies born of smoking mothers are TWICE as likely to die of SIDS.
Step6
Babies born to heavier smokers are 4 TIMES as likely to have low apgar scores. (condition at birth)
Step7
Babies born to smokers are more likely to become hyperactive
Step8
Babies born to smokers are also more apt to develop respiratory conditions.
Step9
If you choose to keep smoking, you are in effect choosing to confine your tiny baby to a very small, confined space filled with smoke. Would you panic if your newborn baby were trapped in a room filled with that much smoke? Of course you would. Think about it.

After having 3 miscarriages myself (no I have never smoked) I can never understand why anyone would want to risk having a healthy baby. Thanks for this article.

I think we all know smoking will most certainly harm an unborn child. I must say I don't quite understand the "How To" aspect of this article.
BTW - I love facts such as "It has been been suggested..." without backing of any sort.

Kudos, for sure. I find it so sad when I see pregnant mothers smoking. It's so easy to not realize that you have a life inside of you that's dependent on what you eat, what you drink, and what you do to your body.
On the other hand, I know how hard it is to fight addiction, and cigarettes are one of the most addicting things in the world. It's crazy to think about how much our society has become addicted to so many different drugs and things.
I've been watching a show on A&E called Intervention. After watching the show, it's made me realize just how the addiction process works and how devastating it is. Basically, they convince the addict that they're in a documentary and use the footage to show them how it's affecting their lives. Check it out: December 3rd at 9pm (http://www.aetv.com/intervention). I am working to support this because we all need to help people fight addic

on 3/11/2008 AFrieske - Major oversight there... I should have stated that 14% of preterm births.... was from the American Lung Association.
