Skiing can be challenging but most falls do not stop a group of people. Falling while getting on a chairlift is a different matter all together. The lift was meant for your convenience, but frequently it can be a very intimidating machine to conquer. If you want to use a chairlift proficiently when you go snow skiing, it is a good idea to know the right moves before you head for the slopes.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Watch the people in line to see, not only how they board, but how many to a seat.

  2. Step 2

Use the lift with the correct number of people. If the lift is a 2-person lift, then get in line with a friend. If you are just learning to use the chairlift for skiing, it is a good idea to ride up with someone that knows you are a beginner and will help.

  3. Step 3

Get in line and wait your turn. Wait for the people ahead of you to get on the chairlift and as they do, quickly move to the boarding point and wait for the lift. Being in position and ready to board is one of the keys to using the chairlift while skiing.

  4. Step 4

Remove your poles and hold them in one hand. This allows you to grasp the bar at the back of the chair with your free hand when it is time to board.

  5. Step 5

Reach behind with your free hand, which should be your outside arm. Always hold your poles in your inside hand and reach backward with your other to grasp the seat and guide it. Use your dominant arm, if you are in the middle, to bring the seat under you while hanging onto the back bar.

  6. Step 6

Bring the seat close enough to slide your posterior down lifting your skis off the ground. Scoot back as far as you can in the seat. Once the safety bar has been pulled down, lay your poles on your knees.

  7. Step 7

Feel your feet touch the ground at the top and disembark. Stand up, grasp your poles in each hand, and allow the seat push you lightly, moving you forward. Use your poles to push off and leave the congested area quickly to avoid collisions.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are by yourself at the lift, you will need to get into the singles line. The lift operators pair you with another single. Make certain that you tell your new partner that you are just learning to use the chairlift for snow skiing.
