How to Find a Job Using Online Websites (updated 6/14/08)

Video Resumes and You Tube, are you ready for the new type of job search? Online resources for job searching abound. Here are some websites and methods available to you via the internet.

1. If you are looking for a new idea in job hunting try video resumes.
   Career Builder, for one, advertises Video Resume as the next generation of online resumes and it's 100% free. Do a websearch for video resumes and you get a large sampling of sites offering this option. Including Jobster,Facebook, Vault.com, HireVue and Resumevideo all offering this option.
2. Experts highly recommend you use the internet as a PART of your job search. Always use other methods to partner with your online efforts. Talk with friends and network, get the word out you are looking. Look at the website of companies you want to target. Do you have a contact there? The internet is a great tool, just make sure it's not your only method.
3. Always start your new job search by update your Resume with your latest job experience and education. Then have a family member, friend, or teacher evaluate your resume to see if it ready.
4. Use online message boards. Online message boards, are online forums where people can talk with each other. Although many internet users use online business message boards, like with assistance with finding a job. In most cases, online message boards are great ways to learn about work-at-home opportunities or nationally operated companies that may have a local branch near you. It is not uncommon for a current company employee to mention that their company is hiring or just outline the fact that they enjoy working for the company in question. Be sure to do your own investigation of any company you hear about.
5. E-Mail Chain Letter Method is a different idea. This is not a recommend method if you are currently employed. Find 20 companies you want to work for and send an email to everyone you know to see if they know anyone who works at these companies. Ask them to contact you if they do, so that you can ask for a referral. Finally, ask them to forward your email to 10 more people.

7. Have an email designated for your job search. If you do not have an email address already you can get a free one at gmail, hotmail or yahoo. Include this email on the top of your resume and with any online job profiles you set up.
8. Go to a search engine, like www.google.com and conduct a general web search for job sites. You will find there are many. Choose monster.com for example.
9. Join this site and others as you branch out. Other sites to consider are: www.careerbuilder.com, www.hotjobs.com, www.jobcentral.com.

11. Create an online resume along with an online profile. You can build one, cut and paste or upload a word document.
12. Save your resume as private or public. Once your resume is public you will receive phone calls and emails about openings companies and recruiters feel your skills are a good match for. Monster has a feature where you can set your resume to public and block a few companies from seeing it. Like your current employer!
13. You can benefit by applying online to a number of jobs instantaneously by turning on the auto-apply feature.
14. As you search for job opportunities at the websites you join, you will have your online profile and resume handy to use when you are ready to apply online.
15. Set up job alerts to have jobs emailed to you pertaining to your area of expertise. This will keep you busy applying for jobs. Notice which jobs you get call backs on. This may be because you are applying for the right job, and you will notice what websites employers use the most. www.jobing.com is becoming very popular.
16. If you are looking for part time work try www.snagajob.com. Just enter in your zip code and see all the places hiring in your area! If you want to work part time and get some benefits, consider Home Depot, benefits come with a part time job with this company.
17. Consider a video online resume. You can upload a video along with your resume. With so many employers looking for employees via the web this is the next direction for resumes.
18. Making your resume public has it advantages. You could receive emails and calls from employers without you applying for their openings. If you are a match for the skills they need, you will find the job search just got easier.

Tips & Warnings

• Consider saving more than one version of your resume so that you can broaden your online job search.
• If you live in a fairly good size city, you will find online sites dedicated to your local area.
• As you search use your zip code and the mileage you are willing to drive. This will help keep you from applying to jobs that will cause you too far of a commute.
• Read about resumes in order to keep your Word.doc resume format up to date. No longer do you see References Available Upon Request at the bottom of resumes.
• Online job websites will not ask you for your SS#. Never provide this information when signing up for a job website membership.
• Job website membership is free. If you are prompted to pay a fee, move on to another site.
• At Monster you can choose to make your resume public, but not your private information, such as your name and phone number.
